Title: Bird Lovers

Subject: Common Gallinule Pair

Location:
Shark River, Everglades National Park, FL, USA

The Story: “I was taking photos of wading birds, alligators, and whatever seemed interesting on the Shark River when I saw one of these birds enter the waterway by the tram road. I casually took a couple of photographs when I noticed a second bird enter the river a short distance away. I was not too interested until I saw the first bird head directly toward the second. I prepared myself to take photos of any action that may occur. I was a little surprised when the first bird seemed to nuzzle the second on the neck, but I was amazed when they came together in perfect symmetry, creating (with some imagination) a heart shape with their bills. I could not have orchestrated the position of these birds any better. I decided to submit this photo for the Picture of the Week just before Valentine’s.”

The image will be available to view on our website from Tuesday, February 12, until Monday, February 18, 2013. No use without permission of photographer © Jack Wills. www.jackwillsphotography.zenfolio.com

The story: “I caught this shot of a red-eyed tree frog during a ‘Critter Demo’ for my Natural History Photography class. We built a few little habitats and set up some lights, pocket wizards, and during one of our model’s spritzers, he decided to show us his marvelous nictitating membrane—or his third eyelid—that protects his eyes while allowing him to see.”

The story: “I arose before dawn one morning and left my wife in the hotel while I went into the park in an effort to capture some images of elk at sunrise. I found a large meadow where I had seen several herds of elk the previous day. I hiked into the meadow well before sunrise and set up in a spot where the elk had obviously spent the night (the grass was flattened). I’m a big fan of silhouettes and at first light I caught this bull elk calling his herd. He was backlit by the early morning sun illuminating the steam coming off of the river.”
